Kathleen A. Hertell passed away peacefully with family at her bedside on April 14, 2018. Loving wife, mother, grandmother and dear friend to many, she was a devoted child of God. Kathleen is predeceased by her son, Keith S. Hertell II. She is survived by her loving husband of 50 years, Keith Hertell, her daughter Kerry Lavelle, her son, Darren Hertell, her daughter-in-law Alison Hertell, and her three grandsons, David, Jack, and Connor Lavelle.
Kathleen was born in Jamaica, Queens on October 21, 1944. She began working for Irving Trust Company at 1 Wall Street at the age of 17. Shortly thereafter, she met Keith while they both were working downtown at Marine Midland Bank. They married at American Martyrs Church in Queens on June 1, 1968. One week later, they moved to Westfield, NJ and have lived there ever since.
Kathleen’s life was guided by her faith: she was one of the original committee members of Young Life, she was Bible Study Fellowship Children’s Leader in Springfield for 16 years, and she hosted a Bible study in her home for 25 years. Kathleen cherished her family and friends and drew strength from membership in a group where she was able to serve others and positively affect their lives. More than that was her natural ability to touch people through her kindness, selflessness, humility, and love. She was truly a special woman to all who knew her, and while her absence will certainly be felt, her influence will live on.
The viewing will be held at Dooley Colonial Home at 556 Westfield Avenue in Westfield, NJ from 4 - 8pm on Monday, April 16, 2018.
A celebration of Kathleen's Life will be held at The First United Methodist Church, Westfield, NJ with a date to be announced.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Renaissance Church, PO Box 160, Summit, NJ, 07902, or at www.renchurch.com.
