Former English Teacher

Robert L. Dahlinger, 89, passed away peacefully at his home in Westfield surrounded by his family on Thursday, October 4, 2018. Born and raised in Jersey City, he lived there until coming to Westfield in 1972.
Robert was a graduate of Lincoln High School, received a Bachelors Degree from Seton Hall and then a Master’s Degree from Fordham University. He was a longtime English teacher at Linden High School before retiring in 1991. He was also an adjunct Professor at now Kean University.
He was a veteran of the US Army, having served during the Korean Conflict before being honorably discharged in 1953 as a Corporal.
He loved his family and spending time with them. He was an avid reader, loved country music and country dancing, loved watching his sports mostly basketball and baseball. He played baseball throughout his youth making All State and semi pro leagues with a shot at a major league team while still keeping in spirit with coaching later on during his teaching career. Robert also studied art at the Flat Iron Building in Manhattan prior to his army service.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy. Surviving are his four children; Robert F., Mary Ann Cirilli – husband Jerry, Dorothy Bindus – husband Ray, and Karen Allen – husband Ashley. He is also survived by his 10 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.

Visitation will be at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield on Thursday from 4-8PM. A Funeral Mass will be held on Friday at 10AM at Holy Trinity Roman Catholic Church in Westfield. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in Robert L. Dahlinger' to Juvenile Diabetes, Center for Hope Hospice or the Lupus foundation.
