Born December 7, 1935 in Newark, New Jersey to Bridget and Frank Gioia, Andrew graduated from East Side High School in Paterson in 1954 and then Rutgers University in 1969, with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Andy then put himself through Law School at night while working as a claims adjuster for State Farm by day earning a law degree from Seton Hall in 1974. Upon passing the bar later that same year, Andy immediately went into private practice where he specialized in criminal law and became a fixture in the Morris, Sussex and Warren county courthouses until his retirement in 2000.
Mr. Gioia was a skilled chess player and artist, and his sharp mind gave him a knack for logic puzzles and riddles. He also enjoyed golf, and was an avid history buff. A loving family man, Andrew was happiest when spending time with his family, particularly at the beach or on outdoor hikes and bike rides. His dry sense of humor was always the source of contagious laughter, and he could rarely finish telling a joke before bursting out laughing himself.
Andrew is survived by his loving wife of 30 years, Kathryn Codella Gioia; his children Glenn Gioia, Kristy Perone, Deborah Codella Stuiber and Marc Codella; daughter in law Stacey Codella; his grandchildren Frankie, Nikki, Roman, Tyler, Brendan, Jordan and Casey; sister Chris and brother in law Mike; niece Patty and nephew Michael.
Friends and family will gather between 7pm and 9pm Thursday, January 3rd, at the Dooley Colonial Home 556 Westfield Ave. in Westfield. A funeral mass will begin at 11am on Friday January 4th at the Parish of St. Helen's on Lamberts Mill Road in Westfield.
IN LIEU OF FLOWERS, donations can be made in Andrew's memory to Center for Hope Hospice & Palliative Care in Scotch Plains.
