Obituary

Eric Jacobsen

Eric Jacobsen passed away peacefully on Monday January 21, 2019 after a short illness. Born on September 2, 1923, in North Brighton near London, England, he spent most of his childhood at Oxhey Corner, Hatch End.

Eric joined the British army at 16, serving as an army mechanic in North Africa and Italy. After the war, he returned to England where he met his lifelong friends, Eddie and Alice Faulkner, and played a lot of (English) football.

In 1952, Eric came to the United States to join his mother, sister and two younger brothers in New York. Settling in Rego Park, Queens, Eric became a telephone repairman for Western Electric (part of AT&T) and remained with the company for his entire career.

After retirement, he moved to Seabrook Village in Tinton Falls, New Jersey. He took up gardening. Beautiful roses and delicious tomatoes were his specialty. He also discovered that he had a wonderful singing voice and joined several choirs. He played pinochle, was unbeatable at chess, enjoyed a good crossword puzzle and was a loyal fan of the Arsenal football club.

Eric loved the beach. His happiest childhood memories were of summers spent on the beach at Bracklesham Bay with his brothers, sister and cousins. When living in New York, he had a sailboat (until a friend sank it) and vacationed in Long Island with friends. He also spent a week each summer at the Jersey shore with his family.

Eric was cherished by his friends and family. He cared for his beloved mother, Violet, until her death in 1976. Working for the telephone company came with the benefit of free long distance calling and he would call all the family to share family news and provide everyone with some good laughs.

Eric is survived by his sister-in-law Iris Jacobsen, nieces Susan Pankratz, Laurie Jacobsen, Patti Nonoman, Amy Jacobsen, Michele Fiorentino, Phillipa Davis and Debbie Mann, nephews Barry Jacobsen, Jeff Pankratz and John Fiorentino, and many grand nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brothers Victor Jopling, Philip Jacobsen, and Norman Jacobsen, sister Betty Streeter and sisters-in-law Arline Jacobsen and Madge Jopling.

Eric will be greatly missed

To the Family of Eric we know this is hard for you, because he was a special person in your lives and I know you will miss him dearly. But we pray that through prayer and reliance on God he'll bring you through this difficult time. But please be comforted as you read the promise at Rev. 21:3,4.

I’m so sorry for your loss. The bible is so true when it mentions “the sting of death”. Death is truly painful for family and friends. The God of the bible Jehovah says he's going to “swallow up death forever and bring back to life on earth all those who have died in his memory” (Isaiah 25:8). This scripture has given me comfort and I pray you receive comfort from it also.
