Joseph Sylvester Masterson, 81, passed away Tuesday, March 5, 2019. Born and raised in Bayonne, NJ, he lived in Westfield for many years before moving to Springfield 20 years ago.

Joseph attended and graduated Xavier Military High School in New York City and Wagner College in Staten Island where he received his BA “Cum Laude”, NY and his JD from Brooklyn Law School “with distinction”, NY and New York University “LM” “with honors”, NY. Unusual for an undergraduate, he was published and relied upon for his legal scholarship by the Supreme Court of California (People v. Phillips). All of this at the age of only 25. Joseph joined the faculty of Brooklyn Law School and taught for 20 years. During his career, Professor Masterson started the Antitrust Department, as well as the Antitrust Curriculum at the Brooklyn Law School. In addition to his legal publications, he served as a mediator, special counsel to Federal “pro bono” cases in the Eastern District of New York City and as President of his own seminar company. Since 2004, Joseph has devoted his time to the Mi Ryung Song Cancer Foundation.
He was predeceased by his wife, Mary. Surviving are his three sons, Joseph, Christopher and Matthew and five daughters, Maryann, Donna, Linda Lisa and Jennifer; thirteen grandchildren; four greatgrandchildren and his beloved Michelle Zhang.
Visitation will be Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield, on Friday, March 8th from 4 PM to 6 PM with a prayer service at 6 PM. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
