Obituary

James Patrick Manning, 86, passed away Wednesday, June 19, 2019, in Sugar Land, Texas.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, where he lived with his wife Joan, and daughter, Mary, before moving to Colonia, NJ. He later relocated his family including two sons, James Jr. and Ronald to Houston, Texas in 1972.
James was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Army and was awarded National Defense Service Medal. He attended Vanderbilt University, studied engineering and played basketball. After college, James worked in construction in New York and his most memorable project was the construction of The Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge, at the time, the longest suspension bridge in the world. He began taking computer classes in the evenings after work, leading to a long career as a Management Information Systems Manager with Raymond International. He enjoyed playing in corporate softball and basketball leagues and tournaments with his Raymond International coworkers all over the city of Houston. He later moved on to a new sport in the 1980’s, racquetball, taking him back to his roots of playing handball in Brooklyn, NY. He was able to enjoy his love of competition, playing a game he loved, climbing the local club ladder.
Some of his fondest memories were coaching his children’s youth baseball, softball, basketball and football teams. The teams had their share of success, but most importantly, his players loved playing for him. He always found time from his busy work schedule to attend his children’s sporting events ranging from all day swim meets, to flights to South Bend, Indiana for a Notre Dame football game, always showing support for his children and their teams.
He retired and moved out to the The Great Northwest, proudly calling Poulsbo, Washington, home. He always had a close connection to the Catholic Church. He was member of Knights of Columbus and was an active volunteer with the Catholic Church. Beginning in the 1980’s, James was very proud to volunteer in the Perpetual Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament ministry at St. John Vianney Catholic Church in Houston and at Our Lady of the Sea Catholic Church in Bremerton, WA.
James will be remembered for his sense of humor, love of family, athleticism, and deep religious conviction.
Surviving are his daughter Mary Manning; his sons, James, Jr. and his wife, Margaret; Ronald and his wife, Lisa; his sisters, Helen Donahue, Bernadette Lavin and Theresa Keller; and his grandchildren, Ian, Olivia and Matthew. He was predeceased by his parents, James Francis Manning and Mary Ellen Manning; and his sister, Elizabeth Peterman.
Visitation will be at Dooley Colonial Home, 556 Westfield Ave., Westfield, on Thursday June 27th, from 6 PM to 9 PM. The funeral will be from the funeral home on Friday from 9 AM followed by a funeral Mass at Holy Trinity R.C. Church in Westfield at 10 AM.

Jim was such an outgoing man. Such an Irishman. We had so many happy times when he and Lynne lived in Houston. Great barbecues with wonderful food and great friends.
After they moved to Washington, my husband and I would visit . A lot of beautiful hikes and site seeing. Jim was a wonderful and caring host. I had some of the best times of my life. I will always remember him.

Jimbo was my friend for so many years, both here in Houston after he met my best friend Lynne, then in Paulsbo, Washington where I visited over the years. We had such fun times & he was a caring, sensitive & generous man. I’ll cherish his memory.
My condolences to Mary, Ronnie & the rest of his beloved family.
