Obituary

William Griffin, of New Providence, NJ, passed away on February 8, 2020. Visitation will be held at Dooley Colonial Home in Westfield on Tuesday, February, 11th from 3-7pm. The funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, February 12th at Holy Trinity Church at 10:30am. Interment will be private at Fairview Cemetery.

William Griffin was born in Dorchester, MA, to Alice Goodale Griffin and her husband. He was a resident of Westfield for 43 years. He was the beloved husband of Jane (Butler) Griffin, loving father of Gail Ryan and her husband Timothy (Monroe Township, NJ), Susan Miller and her husband Russell (La Jolla, California) and William Griffin III and his wife Michelle (Sun Valley, Idaho). He was the cherished grandfather of Elizabeth and Jonathan Miller, Brendan, Patrick and Kaelin Ryan, Avery, Alexandria and William Griffin IV.

He was a graduate of M.I.T and attended Yale University on an Atomic Energy Fellowship receiving a Masters’ Degree in Chemical Engineering. He served his country in the United States Marine Corps in Military Intelligence during the Korean War.

All his life, he was an avid BoSox fan and followed them intensely culminating in four World Series Championships.

William, our dad and husband, was limitless in his love for country, faith and family. His intellectual capacity, moral compass and unconditional love illuminated the world for all who knew him.

My cousin Bill was the friendliest guy ever met. He was smart, optimistic, and always made you feel that you were so important when talking to him. I did not really get to know him as a kid because his mom moved to NY City when I was small. So, I had the privilege of loving him as an adult as he bravely faced serious health problems which he shared with me to get the real information decoded from what his doctors had said so his cousin physician, me p,got him to understand the medical lingo. The cousins in later years would meet at the Venetzia Restaurant in mid summer each year. We planned a ninetieth birthday party for 3 cousins, my sister Maddie, cousin Enders, and Bill last July. Bill was determined to make the trip from NJ to Boston in spite of his heart problem even splitting the trip to come half way to Mystic CT, driven by his charming daughter, Gail only if given the OK by his doctors. However, my dear sister Maddie and my darling daughter Elizabeth died that spring and we cancelled the Trifecta Birthday party in grief over the deaths. So it is with great sadness I can only accept God’s will and pray for these lovely souls that are now in heaven.

We didn’t have the pleasure of meeting you until we moved to Lantern Hill, but in that short time it was obvious to us that you two were are strong, loving, compassionate and fun couple, and so very proud of your children and grandchildren. The support that you gave to each other, especially as health issues arose, was stellar. I had PT right after Bill a few times, and I overheard you, Jane, talking to the therapist, asking questions, suggesting alternatives and encouraging Bill. You were right there fighting to make sure he had the best care possible. I loved witnessing that interaction, that love and dedication. It’s heartwarming to see a couple who takes their wedding vows to heart, the world needs more people like you. We send our love and condolences to the Griffin family. Love, Lynn & Jim O’Neill
